# A journey through MEV discourse.
2020, [MEV Roast](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRHMe0bxkuekl0fXcD8wbDjgWjFXbEhVJ) introduced research dialogue that lit up our journey through the dark forest, open and available to all.
2021, [MEV.wtf](https://hackmd.io/@Carboclanc/H1nYrY5iu) explored the protocol and application level responses to the problem of MEV in a research unconference curated by 17 researchers, in collab with ETHGlobal.
2022, [MEV.day](https://flashbots.notion.site/MEV-DAY-836f88806995412dabc1c7bb7ce4e830) embraced the light-mode and dark-mode of MEV on a dual-stage conference curated by 22 researchers, in collab with the Ethereum Foundation, CowSwap and Shutter Network.

Proposer-builder separation (PBS) is a protocol [design philosophy](https://barnabe.substack.com/p/pbs) emphasizing the relationship between protocol and non-protocol actors for the maintenance and operation of a blockchain. It was first put forth in Vitalik’s [2021 ethResearch post](https://ethresear.ch/t/proposer-block-builder-separation-friendly-fee-market-designs/9725) as a market structure design that leverages the power of specialization to mitigate the centralizing pressure on the validator set from MEV by enabling the block construction process to be outsourced to highly specialized non-protocol actors known as block builders.
The introduction of the MEV-Boost protocol post Merge was an important early step for PBS. Despite its flaws, it has stood as a solid interim out-of-protocol solution as we continue to navigate through the PBS design space: from the elegant [PEPC](https://ethresear.ch/t/payload-timeliness-committee-ptc-an-epbs-design/16054) proposal to the latest version of the enshrined PBS (ePBS) design [PTC](https://ethresear.ch/t/payload-timeliness-committee-ptc-an-epbs-design/16054).

sauve.salon – I can’t wait to hear some updates on suave from Bert and team! Most interested in learning more about suave smart contracts!
pbs.salon – nothing more important than this this week. PBS is still so important to decentralizing and keeping decentralized public blockchains. Not gonna be one to miss!
I’m also curious about how people feel about redistribution, decentralized orderflow, and how we inspire a new generation of searchers!

interested in the pbs, orderflow, censorship and suave saloons
how should coinbase integrate suave across its products and services?
when will PBS be enshrined into Ethereum? possible this actually happens sooner with rollups?
how do we combat the rise of exclusive order flow?
how will intents change (or not change) the plan for suave?
what are he unintended externalities of intents that we need to be thinking about?
